Tint Percentages Explained: What the Numbers Mean

5%, 20%, 35%, 50%... if tint percentages confuse you, you're not alone. The good news: once you understand one simple idea — VLT — every number makes sense. Here's what each level actually looks like and who it suits.

What is VLT?

VLT stands for Visible Light Transmission — the percentage of visible light the film lets through the glass. The lower the number, the darker the tint. So 5% is very dark (a "limo" look) and 70% is very light. That's the whole trick.

The tint levels, explained

• 70% — barely there. Mostly a clear heat/UV film. Great when you want protection without a dark look, or where a light shade is required.
• 50% — light. A subtle tone that cuts glare and heat while keeping the glass bright.
• 35% — medium. The popular all-rounder. A noticeable tint and good privacy without going too dark.
• 20% — dark. Strong privacy and a sharp look; you can still see out clearly in daylight.
• 10% — very dark. Serious privacy, a bold blacked-out look.
• 5% — limo. The darkest common tint. Maximum privacy; usually reserved for rear glass.
• 1% — blackout. Extremely dark, for a full blackout rear look.

Darkness isn't the same as heat rejection

A common mistake: assuming darker automatically means cooler. It doesn't. Heat rejection comes from the film's technology — a quality nano-ceramic film in a medium 35% shade can block more heat than a cheap dyed 5%. Pick your shade for the look and privacy you want, and pick your film for the heat and UV performance.

A quick word on the law
